Irena Tatiboit

After studying at the school of the Opera of Warsaw, specializing in dance pedagogy, Irena Tatiboit was hired in 1970 at the Mazowsze National Polish Ballet. Chosen by the Ministry of Culture to participate in the training in contemporary dancing with the Theater Ballet of Poznan, she was the first to teach this subject at the school of the Opera of Warsaw, in parallel with teaching ballet, while she was still studying at the Superior Conservatory of choreography and pedagogy.

In 1974, she left Poland to go to Malaysia. From 1978 to 1989, she was a dance teacher in Moscow. In 1981, she moved to New York where she complemented her contemporary dance training (Nicolais, Cunningham). She was then a correspondent for the International Dance Festival of Paris. In 1985, she moved to Tunis, where she opened her dance school and the Irena Tatiboit Company.

She has been in Strasbourg since September 1991. As a teacher, a trainer and a choreographer, she has been throwing events and summer programs (Le Carrefour de la Danse), and created the European Center for Dance Education, Le Carré d'Art, with the Irena Tatiboit Dance Company. Teaching and creating are two inseparable aspects of her activity. Each year, her teaching is organized around a new theme for creation (music, white, the shoe, the air, the earth, plants, time, the eclipse, internet, shadow(s), cloning, water, a world tour, equality, …).

“My artistic activity involves both dancing and painting. My view is that these two fields of expression complement each other; their contrast enriches the questioning that underlies my approach to artistic gesture and teaching. In my work, the pictorial material and the dancing body feed one another, and plastic art becomes a metaphor of living movement.”
